Once the car has come to a standstill, turn on your hazard lights.
Put on your reflective vest.
Do not stay in the vehicle: carefully get out of the car and have your passengers get out on the opposite side to the passing traffic.
Stay with your passengers safely on the hard shoulder or verge of the road, as far as possible from the traffic.
Contact your assistance: you will find the number in your vehicle’s maintenance booklet for vehicles still under the manufacturer’s warranty, on your insurance policy or in your ‘Ma Garantie Opteven’ mobile application if you have an Opteven insurance policy.
And what about if I break down on the motorway?
The same thing as if you break down elsewhere, but you must take even more precautions because the speed of the traffic makes the situation even more dangerous and makes roadside assistance even more difficult
Stop in the emergency lane, taking care making sure you keep out of the traffic lanes.
Switch on your vehicle’s hazard lights.
Put on your reflective vest and make sure that all your passengers put on theirs.
Leave the vehicle on the opposite side to the passing traffic. Do not never open any doors on the side of the passing traffic!
Immediately take shelter behind the safety barrier and as far away as possible from the lane of traffic.
Notify assistance from the nearest orange emergency call box (every 2 km).
Or call 112 and give your position indicating the number of the motorway, your direction of travel, and if possible the reference indicated on the sign in the shape of a milestone. Your ‘Ma Garantie Opteven’ application also gives your geographical position, which is useful to geolocate you easily.
Once breakdown assistance has been notified, wait for the breakdown teams behind the safety barrier.
Remember: there is no need to use the red triangle when you have pulled over on the hard shoulder, so don’t take any unnecessary risks!
Important: Repair on the motorway is technical and dangerous and can only be performed by authorised personnel who will tow you to a garage: it is therefore essential to notify the motorway security services.
What happens in the case of an accident?
Fill in an accident statement with the drivers of all the vehicles involved. Describe the circumstances and the damage related to the accident precisely and accurately. Our application will guide you on how to fill in an accident statement.
Please do not: discuss the facts and try to convince the other driver he’s the one responsible. Just stick to the facts! It’s the job of your insurance to determine all the reasons and responsibilities.
Do not repair or engage a repair procedure before your car assessment. Your car reparation fees may not be covered if you act without your insurance’s agreement.
